  • Statewide Texas Birding Competition Deemed Great Success — Birding Classic Donates $17,000 to Birding, Habitat Conservation, Nature Tourism Projects [News Images]

    AUSTIN – Swarovski Optik teams bested the competition in three different categories of the first statewide version of the Great Texas Birding Classic,and two of those wins enabled its teams to select which habitat conservation projects receive $10,000 of the $17,000 awarded from this year’s event.
  • Zebra Mussels Documented in Lewisville Lake — Boaters urged to clean, drain and dry 

    AUSTIN – Less than a year following the discovery that zebra mussels had established a population in Lake Ray Roberts, the destructive invasive species has been confirmed in Lewisville Lake by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This is the third lake in Texas, and the second within the Trinity River basin, where zebra mussels have been discovered.

  • National Survey Will Explore Dove Hunter Opinions 

    AUSTIN — The National Dove Hunter Survey, a cooperative effort by the state fish and wildlife agencies, all four flyway councils, and the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) will ask dove hunters from across the U.S. to share their experiences and opinions about dove hunting.

  • Fireworks at the Fishery to Light Up Skies Over Athens 

    ATHENS, Texas—The annual Fourth of July fireworks show at the Texas Freshwater Fisheries Center (TFFC) is coming up on Thursday, July 4. The show will last approximately one-half hour and is one of the biggest in East Texas.

Washington-on-the-Brazos Hosting 4th of July Festivities

The “Birthplace of Texas” between Brenham and Navasota, will once again host a day of fun activities on July 4, capped off by a remarkable fireworks extravaganza, choreographed to patriotic tunes. Admission is free to Washington-on-the-Brazos State Historic Site and to attend the 14th annual “Fireworks on the Brazos!,” presented by H-E-B in cooperation with the Washington-on-the-Brazos State Park Association.  Food vendors will be on hand all day. Children will be able to participate in 1800s period games beginning at 5 p.m. Free Blue Bell ice cream and soft drinks will be served at 5:30 p.m. Tubie and the Touchtones from Navasota, the Blues Capital of Texas, will perform at 7:15 p.m. in the park’s amphitheater. 10th Annual Last Frontier Heritage Celebration and Buffalo Soldier Living History Encampment

Take a trip back to the western frontier by visiting the 10th annual Texas’ Last Frontier Heritage Celebration and Buffalo Soldier Encampment, June 29-30 in Morton. There will be a parade, a “Decorate your bike” contest, military ceremony and drills, a frontier life and skill presentation, the Buffalo Soldier expedition re-enactment, riding and roping events, and more.
