The regular meeting of the Twentieth Century Club was held in the home of Janice Gage on March 20. The meeting was called to order by president Jean Hamil and assistant secretary Sandy Dean called the roll call. Members responded by giving their personal concept of heaven. Most described it as perfection-peaceful and beautiful, providing total contentment. While some described it as having choirs of angels, others pictured golden streets and a reuniting with family and friends. Special guest Maria Marsalis, mother of Mrs. Gage, was introduced. Members were reminded of the upcoming Spring Trip to Big Pine Lodge and a Caddo River Boat trip on April 3. Also, project chairman Melinda Smith passed out information and ticket packets to each member for the April 17 Taster Salad Luncheon at the First Methodist Church. This will be the club’s only fund raising event for the year

.

Following the business meeting Jeannie Glaze gave a perceptive review of the book Proof of Heaven by Dr. Eben Alexander. This controversial book describes what the 54 year old neurosurgeon experienced when he claims he visited heaven during a bout with bacterial meningitis. He said rather than golden gates, he had an immersion into a mucky jello-like substance alternating with a bright and sunny world. It was like taking a tour, back-and-forth from one surrounding to the other. When he awoke from his disease induced coma, his family urged him to write down his memories which he later developed into this book. While he never mentions Jesus, he does say the experience made him into a believer of the afterlife. A lively discussion followed at the conclusion of the review with members voicing their disbelief of his experience.

A tea table featuring shrimp salad in avocado halves, pink spring salad, chocolate dipped strawberries, assorted crackers and coffee was served.

Members in attendance in addition to those mentioned above included Cal Arnold, Mikie Clark, Merle Cross, Betty Finney, Bridgett Fowler, Annette Herrmann, Cindy Murry, Mary Ann Patterson, Rolinda Shipp, Rebecca Skinner, Bettye Lou Smith, Raye White, Barbara Williams, Irma Williams and Margo Carter.
