The cooperative’s Board of Directors named Charlie Cano, a 11-year-veteran of the company, as General Manager/CEO of the co-op and its subsidiaries, filling a vacancy created by the retirement of former General Manager Danny Kellar.
A Texas native, Cano was born and raised in Perryton. He graduated from Texas Tech at Lubbock with a degree in Electrical Engineering and a minor in mathematics.
Cano began his career at ETEX in 2003, after several years of experience in the telecommunications industry working as an Outside Plant Design Engineer, a Project Manager, and then Director of Sales for the national consulting firm known first as Hicks and Ragland, and later as CHR Solutions.
Cano’s service to ETEX began nearly a decade ago with the position of Engineering Manager. In 2011, he was promoted to the rold of General Manager of MobiNet, and a wholly-owned subsidiary of ETEX, and tasked with the launch of the company’s wireless LTE (ultra-high speed Internet) initiative.
He said he plans to “expand on the long-standing ETEX mission to deliver state-of-the-art communications, information and entertainment services to East Texas residents.
“Etex has always been a really good company. It’s had continuous growth,” Cano said. “We will continue to evaluate our customer service and technology and do the best for our members and customers.”
Cano and his wife Shirley live outside Gilmer with their three children, Analese, 10; Lucas, 7; and Devin, 2.
Kellar was General Manager for over 15 years, leading the co-op into advancing technology. One major achievement was the “overbuild” of fiber optic to Gilmer and Holly Lake, a $6.8-million project which gave people in those areas a choice between Verizon and ETEX for service. (Cano was engineer on the project).
He retired to Brownwood, where he has family and property.
ETEX has more than 12,000 members and customers in seven exchanges, including parts of seven counties and covering 710 square miles.
