The First United Methodist Church hosted “Celebrate Scouting 2013” on Scout Sunday, Feb. 10, in honor of Gilmer’s Boy Scout Troop 314, Pack 314, Crew 314 and Girl Scout Troop 3614. First UMC has sponsored Boy Scout 314 since 1947 and has recently begun to host Gilmer’s Girl Scout Troop.

The service began with the presentation of colors. The color guard consisted of Dwight Cook, Jessica Taylor, Christian Fennel, Harrison Truitt, Kadi Amaya, and Blake Jackson. The pledges of allegiance were led by Raymond Sorrells, Senior Patrol Leader, of Troop 314.

Chandra Sorrells, the Charter Organization Representative, presented a brief talk on the importance of scouting. She introduced the scout leaders, including Scoutmaster Freddie Fitzgerald, Assistant Scoutmaster Cam Corcoran, Crew Advisor Ken Scheid, Cub Master Nathan Todd and Girl Scout Group leader Paula Tefteller .

Special recognition was given to two scouts from Troop 314 who achieved the rank of Eagle Scout this year. These are Benjamin Proffer and Jonathan Erb. Benjamin gave a brief presentation about his Eagle Scout project, which consisted of cleaning and repairing facilities at a local cemetery. Following Benjamin’s presentation, all former Eagle Scouts and their parents were recognized.

Also, Dwight Cook, Raymond Sorrells, and Nick Sorrells were recognized for achieving the God and Church award. This recognition takes three to five months to complete and gives youth an opportunity to understand the church’s structure and objectives and to participate in service projects that will give them a better understanding of the mission of the church. Recipients were awarded a four-color cross pin. Reverend Richard Laster was presented with a pin recognizing his service as the God and Church Counselor.

Following the service, the scouts were invited to a reception of punch and cookies. The following scouts attended Celebrate Scouting 2013: Girl Scouts - Molly Sullivan, Jessica Taylor, Kadi Amaya, Kylie Jordan, McKayla Caldwell, Sara Pinto, Cheyanne Pierce, Cub Scouts - Connor Todd, Blake Jackson, Jonas Parish, James Pierce, Kohl Jordan, Coltin Mott-Hays, Bryce Meadows, Jayke Bass, Cameron Bass, Toby Benson, Ryan Brown, Johnathan Melton, Hunter Melton, Benjamin Truitt, Keegan Sprouse, Seth Weeks and Boy Scouts -Nick Sorrells, Derrick Cocoran, Tyrese Buchanan, Harrison Truitt, Raymond Sorrells, Christian Fennel and Dwight Cook.
