National Science Foundation Summer Science Institute Opportunity for Students Interested

in Doing Research on Animals and Plants

As Jarvis Christian College prepares for the kick off of the National Science Foundation Summer

Science Institute, it continues to accept eligible applicants to the program. The program starts on

June 9 and ends on July 18, 2013.

The NSF Summer Science Institute offers a field school that will teach the basic practical skills

needed to study organisms in their environment and make publishable or marketable conclusions.

Focusing on the practical, marketable, and deliverable aspects of econlogy, the field school faculty

will cover the full range of experience students need. The faculty are experienced and knowledgeable

in the areas of fish survey, floristic survey, insect survey, wetland entrepreneurship, bioinformatics,

and endangered species.

The NSF Summer Science Institute targets high school juniors and seniors and college students

interested in doing research on animals and plants. To be eligible, applicants must submit transcripts

and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor or other educator.

Institute participants will earn transferable college credit for ENVR 1401 (Introduction to

Environmental Science with emphsis on Botany, Entomology, Aquatics or Bioinformatics - 4

hours), and BIO 4491 (Research Techniques in Biology - 2 hours). They will complete an

environmental abstract, an independent research project, and build professional relationships with

museum research associates and visiting scientists in their chosen field.

Program participants will live in the dorms on the Jarvis campus. Tuition and room and board are

paid and students will be paid a stipend to cover the costs of attending, security deposits, and
