The Gilmer Buckeye Varsity had a tough day in their first chance to play on the newly installed upgraded FieldTurf. They began the day at 9 am with a 37-28 loss to the Grace Community Cougars, coached by former Gilmer Asst. Coach Mike Maddox. Gilmer was down by six near the end of the game and got down to the Grace 1 before an interception at the goal line with under a minute to play gave Grace the 9-point lead and sealed the victory.
In their second game at 9:45, the Buckeyes got within three points, at 21-24, before falling 38-21 to the Sulphur Springs Gold Team.
The Bucks got an hour of rest before their third game of the morning at 11:15 against the Daingerfield Tigers. Gilmer got into scoring position several times, only to come up short of the goal line on each possession. Daingerfield shut the Buckeyes out 21-0.
In their fourth and final game of the day, which began at noon, the Lindale White Team defeated the Buckeyes 41-21.
The news was not all bad for Gilmer fans though, as the Gilmer Junior Varsity won the JV Division of the Tournament. They finished second in their pool, and took on Whitehouse in the Semi-Final game. They won that contest and faced Sulphur Springs, who defeated Lindale in the other Semi-Final game for the Championship of the JV Division. The Bucks had lost to the Wildcats earlier in pool play, but thanks to some pinpoint passes by McLane Carter and three TD catches by Brian Restine and one by Chase Tate, they avenged the earlier loss with a 31-14 victory in the Championship Game.
In the Championship of the Varsity Division, Daingerfield defeated the Sulphur Springs Gold Team 34-28.
The Gilmer 8th Grade Black Team finished second in their pool and made the playoffs, but lost in the semi-final game to Whitehouse. Lindale defeated Sulphur Spings to set up the Championship Game. Whitehouse defeated the Eagles to win the Championship.
In the 7th Grade division, Lindale defeated Whitehouse in their Semi-Final game and Grace defeated the Sulphur Springs Blue Team. Grace beat Lindale for the Championship.
In the Varsity Lineman’s Challenge, Bryant from Sulphur Springs won the Bench Press; Jackson from Sulphur Springs won the Hang Clean for reps, the Pro Agility, the Sack Drill and was the Overall Champion. Brady English from Gilmer won the Obstacle Course.
In the JV Lineman’s Challenge, Wheeler from Gilmer won the Bench Press, Hang Clean, Obstacle Course and was the Overall Champion, and Hill from Sulphur Springs won the Pro Agility and Sack Drill.
The Buckeyes will participate this coming Saturday at the ETBU 7-on-7 Tournament in Marshall. The event begins at 9 a.m.
