WARMING UP to start the day, this Mourning Cloak butterfly (Nymphalis antiopa) rests as temperatures rise and its wings strengthen. A nearby elm tree was probably its host plant, and after a hibernation during the heat of summer, this species will emerge again in the cooler days of autumn to enjoy overripe fruit and the nectar of zinnas. This variety emerges when temperatures reach over 60 degrees F. They range over almost all of the lower 48 states, into Mexico, Alaska and Canada.
