Upshur County District Attorney Billy Byrd said Thursday he and his staff are taking precautions in the wake of the fatal shootings of the Kaufman County District Attorney, his wife, and one of his Assistant District Attorneys.

Byrd said he knew, although “just professionally,” District Attorney Mike McLelland, who with his wife Cynthia was found slain at their home near Forney last Saturday, and Assistant District Attorney Mark Hasse, who was shot near a courthouse in Kaufman Jan. 31.

“We’re (Byrd and his staff) cautious, but I really wouldn’t want to go into any of those things (specifically),” said Byrd, who has three female assistant prosecutors and several office workers. “We’re aware of the dangers. . . . It’s nothing compared to what our law enforcement officers deal with every day.”

Since 1970, Byrd said, only 13 prosecutors have been murdered in the United States.

Asked for his opinion about security at the Upshur County Justice Center, where his office is located, the district attorney said, “Security issues are matters I just don’t discuss, so I really couldn’t comment on that.”
