ETBU Debate Takes Second at MC tournament; Hiltzman and Adcock Among Top Speakers

MARSHALL, Texas (12/09/13) – The East Texas Baptist University Debate team competed at the Mississippi College Deep South Debate Tournament December 5-6, 2013. The team won the second place overall team sweepstakes trophy, finishing only behind LSU Shreveport in the two-day competition.

In the individual level of competition, ETBU had two of the top speakers in the tournament. Sophomore Dakota Hiltzman of Gladewater was the top-ranked speaker in the Varsity division and Junior Kenny Adcock of Joshua was the second best speaker in the Novice division. Speaker awards are given to the competitors with the highest number of speaker points after the six preliminary rounds of debate. Speakers are awarded points on such factors as delivery, organization, refutation, logic, courtesy, and cross examination

Sophomore Madysen Neathery of Wake Village, competing in only her fourth collegiate debate tournament, compiled a 4-2 preliminary record and advanced through the Novice division competition, finishing as the fifth seeded competitor. She defeated her teammate and quarterfinal opponent Adcock who was the fourth seed. Neathery went on to also defeat her semifinal opponent and advanced to the finals before losing.

Sophomore Ashley Pollard of Hallsville, competing in her first debate tournament ever, also advanced to elimination rounds in the Novice division. She won her quarterfinal round, but lost in the semifinals to the eventual Novice champion.

Hiltzman, competing in the Varsity division, also advanced to the elimination rounds of the competition. He too won his quarterfinal round before falling in the semifinals as well.

This was the ETBU squad's fifth tournament of the season. Thus far, the team has two second place team finishes and one third place finish. Individual team members have two tournament championships and two second place finishes.

"We have had an excellent first half of the season," said Dr. Cole Franklin, coach of the ETBU team. "We've had a lot of team successes and individual wins. We also hosted a very successful tournament in November. I am very proud of this squad. We are looking forward to finishing strong in the spring."

The team will not compete again until February of 2014. In the spring semester, the team will compete in tournaments at Bossier Parish Community College, Henderson State University, College of the Mainland, and Middle Tennessee State University.
