Four Gilmer High School Twirlers competed in the MA Dance National Competition at the Fort Worth Convention Center on Friday and Saturday, March 22nd and 23rd. These girls twirled with 1, 2, and 3 batons with tricks such as juggles, fish tails, two turns, and illusions in front of a couple of hundred people including a colorguard group from South Africa. Penelope Vestal and Melina Prince competed in the 9th-10th grade age category and Kat Ivey and Kailon Culberson competed in the 11th-12th grade age category. This was Melina's and Kat's first time to attend this national competition.

There were many other twirlers in each age category from areas such as Ohio, Iowa, Houston, Dallas, and of course East Texas. Penelope placed 6th in her category bringing home a trophy while the other girls received a first division and a medal. These twirlers learned their solo routines from their high school sponsor, Blair Maxwell at Blair's Elite Twirling Academy in Kilgore. Mrs. Blair is very proud of their hard work and dedication!
