NEW JOURNALISM CONTEST - Cash Prizes!

 

Online, print, broadcast coverage eligible for Showcase Award

AUSTIN, TEXAS (September 12, 2013) —The Headliners Foundation has established a new $2,000 award for Texas journalists with entry criteria that encompass online journalism as well as more traditional print and broadcast news coverage.

 

The Showcase Award for Enterprise and Innovation in Journalism will spotlight outstanding journalism that makes a significant impact on government, public policy or the conduct of a business, nonprofit or other organization.

 

Eligible submissions to the Showcase must be from a professional Texas-based news provider—print, broadcast or digital—that distributes at least monthly. Entries will be drawn from material submitted to the Headliners Foundation online that is selected for display in the “Showcase” section of the official website of the Headliners Foundation of Texas.

 

Judges will consider a broad range of journalism including, but not limited to, investigative stories, long-form pieces, series or packages dealing with key issues or breaking news, and interactive projects that engage the audience.

Press Broadcasters,” said Mark Morrison, Headliners Foundation chair and lecturer at the University of Texas School of Journalism. “One of our goals is to widen the universe of media that compete for Headliners Foundation Awards. All professional media will be

eligible, including magazines, web-only publishers and even small, specialized news providers as long as they meet our criteria.”

 

  Entries must be submitted for display in the Showcase section of the Headliners Foundation’s web site by qualifying news organizations or reporters, editors and other members of the professional media community within 90 days of their initial publication or broadcast. For 2013 only, materials published/produced the first six months of the year (January 1-June 30, 2013) must be submitted by September 30, 2013. Material published/produced between July 1 and December 31, 2013 must be submitted within 90 days of their publication or broadcast. After September 30, 2013, only entries published between July 1, 2013 and December 31, 2013 will be accepted. The contest closes March 31, 2014, and the winner and any runners-up will be announced in the spring 2014.

Winners of the Enterprise and Innovation Award will be honored at the Foundation’s Mike Quinn Awards Luncheon each fall. The inaugural winners of will be announced in the spring of 2014 and recognized that fall. First-place winners will receive a $2,000 award. As many as two runners-up may also be named to each receive a $1,000 prize.

 

The Headliners Foundation will continue to support awards in 11 existing select categories through its partnership with the Texas APME and TAPB.   In 2013, the Headliners Foundation awarded $27,000 to reporters and newsrooms across Texas.  Media outlets that take part in AP competitions are also eligible for the new Showcase Award, but must enter the competition separately.
