Raising children is not an easy endeavor. It seems like the moment the responsibility is thrust upon us we are inexperienced and have many more questions than we have answers, and the answers we have do not apply! We grew up watching how to do it, right?
Your father or someone who served as a dad gave their time and energy to do the work it takes to raise a boy. If we had paid attention we would know by now what worked and what didn’t! We would be an expert! I think mostly we end up having to reinvent the wheel every time the responsibility is passed down. That’s okay gentlemen, let’s keep on reinventing because no one of us ever gets it just right.
We depend on God’s grace daily when it comes to raising up the next generation. We have the same job our fathers had; to prepare a generation to handle a world of problems and situations for which we have no answers. They must wrestle with decisions that were similar to every generation but not with the same situations and people. They must learn to wake up every day with the same solution we depend on.
What is that solution? Faith in God. Our faith is in the God who created and provides for them in the same way He has provided for every generation. His “manna in the desert” is as useful to us today as it was to the Israelites. We still can’t put our finger on exactly what it is! God provides! God is faithful! God’s Word is true to every generation that has depended on it!
Train your child up in the way he should go and when he is old he will not depart from it! (Proverbs 22:6) That’s a powerful verse! That’s a wonderful promise! It means however you train your child, he will always go back to that training. That is good if you teach them to trust God.
That will take effort on your part and mine. It takes more effort to direct a powerful force for good than to let it drive itself to destruction. That’s on us, dads. Train them up, direct them, show them how to understand God’s Word and pray for strength. Your example is the best. If they do not have your example they will follow someone else’s example. And when your child is grown they will not depart from it. Don’t let that happen, dad. Lets work together to depend on God so they can watch us! Happy Father’s Day, dads!
