Harmony staff honored as 'Coach of the Year'

The Harmony Eagles made a strong appearance in this year’s District 9-2A, Division I, All District listings, with three players sharing superlative honors with other members of the district and the Harmony coaches as a group capturing Coach of the Year honors.

Harmony went from a 1-9 record in 2010 to the best performace ever by an Eagle team when they won area over Marlin, 9-7, and went 9-3 before falling to Crockett in the regional semifinals.

Jalen Overstreet, a nephew of the famed David Overstreet of Big Sandy’s vintage years, captured the district’s Most Valuable Player award.

Harmony Travis Laastad shared defensive MVP honors with Tatum’s Laderrion Johnson,

Two opposing Eagles, Harmony’s Austin Anderson and New Diana’s Marco Newsome, shared top defensive linemen honors.

Harmony’s Tim McCoy joined Jefferson’s Chris Smith and Tatum’s Javolick Garrett as the Newcomers of the Year.

Making First Team All District from Upshur County schools were Harmony’s Wesley Schoon, quarterback and punter; Matt Hosea, running back; Lucas Askew, receiver; and Hayden Means and Dalton Gage, offensive linemen.

New Diana’s Taylor Ligon also was named All District offensive lineman.

On defense, Harmony’s Casey Whittemore, lineman, joined Reid Rendon, outside linebacker; Justin Miller, inside linebacker; and defensive back Alan Peralta in getting First Team All District recognition.

Second Team-All District:

Offense—Quarterback Garrett Barton, New Diana; Running Back Brandon Wesley, New Diana; Line—Chase Ferguson, Harmony; Trent Davis, New Diana; and Tight end—Palmer Child Harmony, Carson Fogle, New Diana.

Defense:

Line­—Aaron Keith, Harmony; OLB Brandon Glenn, Harmony; Brandon Wesley, New Diana; ILB Charlie Moler, Harmony; Defensive Back— Daven Murphree, Harmony; Garrett Hounsel, New Diana; Punter and Kicker—Antonio Barron, New Diana.
