Do you or someone you know have diabetes, if you don’t count yourself lucky.

Unfortunately, you probably know someone, maybe a friend or a family member that has this disease.

According to the U.S Department of Health and Human Services, 25.8 million Americans have diabetes, that’s 8.3 percent of the population.

Seven million of these people don’t even know they have diabetes. It is estimated that 79 million people have pre-diabetes. These are alarming statistics!

Harmony Student Council thought it was so alarming that they wanted to do something about it.

So on Saturday, April 21, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. they will be hosting a “Walk For A Cure” at the Harmony Track.

You don’t have to walk the entire time. It is a come-and- go event.

All proceeds will go to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

Kelly Laminack, one of the student council sponsors, who by the way has juvenile diabetes, said if you don’t want to walk or can’t there are several other ways that you can help.

You may sponsor one of the student council members, or you can give a onetime donation of $20 or more.

They also welcome teams. If you would like to create a team, there’s no limit on members, you may pay $10 per person or you may get pledges.

If you would like to make a donation, you may send checks to Harmony High School (attention: HS Student Council Sponsor). Checks are to be made out to JDRF.

If you would like to sponsor a Student Council member to walk, you may call the high school with your contact information and someone will be in touch with you.

“We are very excited to have a walk for diabetes and we hope that it will be a great success,” Mrs. Laminack said.

If you have any questions you may contact Kelly Laminack or Veronica Austin at Harmony High School @725-5495.
