Old Mill Marketplace Kicks Off Spring
With Chili Cook Off and Record-Setting Easter Egg Hunt
Come to the Old Mill Marketplace in Canton on Saturday to put a little spring in your step with the 14th Annual CASI Sanctioned Chili Cook Off and bring the kids to take part in a record-setting Easter Egg Hunt with 13,000 eggs.
The theme of this year's cook off is "Peace, Love, Chili and Easter Eggs!" In addition to the Chili Cook Off that runs from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., there will be more than 13,000 eggs hidden all over The Mountain to be discovered immediately following the cook off festivities at 4 p.m. Prizes, money or candy will be hidden in the eggs.
"The Easter Bunny, live buffalo, Indians, cowboys and wolves will all be on hand to make your day on The Mountain a fun time for all ages," said Debbie Reaves, co-owner of Old Mill Marketplace. "There will also be bargains galore in all of The Mountain shops. Shop owners will be running specials to join in on all the festivities."
Visitors to The Mountain can purchase a sampler cup to taste the chili and vote on their favorites.
The Chili Cook Off was founded in 2000 by Susan Matassa, owner of The Buffalo Girls Hotel, to bring exposure to The Mountain, which is a shaded hillside alongside Old Mill Marketplace. The Mountain features more than 200 shops, cafes, live cowboy gun fights, music and shopping until 11 p.m. on Friday and Saturday nights of First Monday Trade Days weekends.
Since 2000, the Chili Cook Off has grown from 21 cooks to more than 61. All money raised from the cook off is donated to C.L.A.W. (Citizens League for Animal Welfare) and used for rescued pet adoptions. The cook off is also CASI (Chili Appreciation Society International) sanctioned, meaning Saturday's winner goes to the finals in Terlingua.
The Old Mill Marketplace, located three blocks east of downtown Canton on Hwy 64, is a family-owned and family-friendly shopping venue consisting of The Village Shops, The Pavilions, and The Mountain. This First Monday Trade Days venue features more than 100 acres of shopping, unique bed and breakfast accommodations, delicious food, live music and more.
