LONGVIEW — Enrollment is under way for LeTourneau University’s 2012 Summer Camps for students entering grades K-12 and a special camp during lunch for adults. Week-long academic and athletic camps begin June 4 and run through August 10. These camps are designed to help students enjoy hands-on learning opportunities throughout the summer.
“LeTourneau University Summer Camps are a balance of fun, education, and faith,” said Marty Lane, director of Conference and Event Services. LETU is offering a collection of camps in art, creativity, robotics, science, skills, fun and sports.
Art camps include the popular drama and cinema camps taught by Doris Collier include: “Once Upon A Time” June 25-29, “Camp’s Got Talent” June 18-22, “Hollywood Movie Stars” June 11-15, “Movie Makers” June 4-8 and “Stage Fun” July 16-20. Collier has been leading popular summer campus at LETU for many years for grades K-12.
Several new creativity camps are offered this year such as “Jewelry Making” June 18-22, “3D Art” June 18-22, “Scrapbooking 101” June 25-29, and “Artsy Animals” June 25-29. Campers will continue to enjoy “Tape Art” July 16-20, “Cool Creations” June 18-22, “Kids’ Architecture” July 9-13 and “Wild World of Arts & Crafts” July 9-13.
LEGO® Robotics camps will be guided again this year by the ever-popular Janice Park and Paula Hjorth, both professional teachers of robotics. Due to high demand, LETU has expanded robotic camp offerings to include a second and third level for more advanced campers. LETU has invested in new LEGO® equipment for these higher level camps. Another new addition to our LEGO® camps this year will be extended “Lego: Battle Robots” June 4-8 and June 11-15, and “Lego Robotics: Battle Robots Programming” June 18-22 for a full day or half-day.
Several science and space camps will be taught by returning camp instructor Lee Wilkinson, including: "LeTourneau Space Camp" June 4-8 and June 25-29, “Slime Ka-Boom” June 11-15, “Incredible Stuff” June 18-22, “Space Camp Rocket Summer” June 25-29. Wilkinson is an Illinois-based professional camp director who travels all over the world entertaining and educating children grades 2-8. Another popular science camp instructor, Lance Homeniuk, will offer “Insane Science” June 11-15 and “Jr. Engineers” July 16-20. Tammy Baker teaches our science camps to our younger campers. Sure to be exciting are “Super Science” June 4-8, June 11-15, June 18-22 and “Super Science 2” June 25-29, July 9-13, July 16-20.
Skills will be taught as professional manners expert Amy Riestenberg will teach “Manners Boot Camp” June 25-29 and “Say ‘No Thank you’ to Bad Manners!” June 25-29. Other skill camps include: “Basic First Aid and Survival Skills” July 9-13, “Self Defense for Children” June 4-8 and “Introduction to Martial Arts” July 9-13.
The always popular “Flight: Pre-Flight” June 4-8 and “Flight: Pilot” June 11-15 camps will return this year, as well as “Police Academy” June 11-15 and “Police Academy 2” June 25-29. For the younger flight enthusiasts, we will have an “Airplane Camp” June 11-15 for the 3rd – 6th graders.
A new camp for adults this year will include “Self Defense for Adults” from noon to 1 p.m. July 16-20. This camp will prove to be a great investment of a lunch hour.
History camps include “Ancient Egypt” July 16-20 and “Medieval Times” July 16-20. Other camps include a superheroes camp “Hero Clix Camp” June 11-15; “Smorgasbord” June 11-15, and “Young Adventures” June 4-8 and July 16-20, and
“Reading Rocks” June 25-29 for the younger crowd.
Sports camps for various ages and skill levels will include baseball, volleyball, basketball, golf, tennis and soccer camps, directed and instructed by LETU coaches and student-athletes. Sports camps offer basic skill development and extend to teach the finer points of the games, depending upon the skill levels of the campers. One-on-one instruction as well as team strategy is incorporated in all camps.
LETU sports camps are designed to instill a love for and appreciation of sports and develop each camper’s personal skill levels. Junior high and high school campers will receive instruction aimed at skill development for their school teams.
