Footlights East Texas Spirit Competitive Cheer Teams won a national title in the recent Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders National All-Star Cheerleading Competition.

More than 7,000 athletes from Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas and Louisiana competed in the Championships at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington.

This is the fifth appearance for the local teams consisting of over 60 girls and boys from Gilmer and the East Texas Area.

After completing their All-Star routine, the Senior Team won the National Title. Along with a DCC team trophy, the members were awarded Championship jackets in the famous Stars and Cowboy colors.

The youth team received runner-up in their age division, and the mini-team received a superior rating.

Footlights director Carla Harrison was extremely proud of the performances of the teams.

“The level of difficulty and precision of the teams have for exceeded last year’s routines,” Mrs. Harrison said. “Our students have become one of the top teams in Texas, getting better with each competition.”

East Texas Spirit Teams were formed nine years ago, when Mrs. Harrison said she wanted to give local students a chance to become competitive athletes in cheerleading and tumbling.

The staff has worked diligently to showcase these local teams in many state and national competitions.

Coaches and choreographers for the groups are Mrs. Harrison, Staci Stuart, Aaron Morris and Zach Wilson.

Student coaches are Bethany Royer and Brody Stuart.
