Press Release

SAN ANTONIO SINGER BILLY MATA TO ATTEMPT WESTERN SWING WORLD

RECORD

Recruits help from dancers all over Texas to show the world the Official Music of

Texas and to help the folks in need in West, Texas.

SAN ANTONIO, TEXAS April 23, 2013 Billy Mata & the Texas Tradition will attempt to set a

Guinness World Records® Record for the largest number of couples dancing Western Swing at

Anhalt Hall near Spring Branch, Texas, on the evening of May 4, 2013. Mata is recruiting

dancers from all across Texas to help break the current record.

The internationally recognized record attempt is set to raise awareness and interest for the

Official State Music of Texas, Western Swing. In the light of recent national events in the news,

particularly in West, Texas, which was rocked by the explosion last week that left 15 people

dead and more than 200 hurt, an additional opportunity was realized.

Joanne Heston, event organizer explains. “We were already putting out the call to all country

music dancers to help bring world attention to Western Swing when we saw all of the

devastation in West, Texas and Boston. We knew we would be gathering a whole lot of people

together, so we had to find a way to put our attempt for a World Record to even more good

use,” Heston said.

“The majority of the 15 people who died in West were the first responders to the emergency.

We asked our local Volunteer Fire Department to come out and pass the boot to help the relief

effort for the West emergency personnel who worked so hard - and lost so much,” Heston said.

Folks here in Texas have hearts as big as the state we live in and we all come together in times

like this, we just want to do what we can to help West get back on their feet,” Heston added.

“On a lighter note, nothing could be better than Texas holding the Guinness World Records®

Record for dancers all dancing Western Swing at once. This isn’t a marathon dance; it is the

number of couples dancing Western Swing for 5 minutes while judges verify the event. Official

word is we now need 398 couples to set the new record. I know we can get well over that

'cause in Texas we only know how to go BIG!!,” said Heston.

Billy Mata, award winning Western Swing recording artist and bandleader from San Antonio will

host the event.

“We need as many folks as possible to not only help us achieve the World Record but to do

what we can for these families in West who have suffered so much loss. Texas is where

Western Swing got its start,” said Mata.

Mata encourages dancers to come even if they are not sure they know how to dance Western

Swing.

“We’ll have dance instructors on hand for folks to brush up or even learn how. Joel Gammage

of Mannie Gammage’s Texas Hatters will be on hand for a dance demonstration and you can

even sign up for a dance lesson. Then you can say you danced for a World Record! We’ll also

have a traditional country music Saturday night for the rest of the evening. We know it will be a

great time for everyone who comes,” Mata said.

The event is being co-sponsored by Keepin’ the Texas Tradition Music, L.L.C.; KOKE Radio in

Austin, Texas; Swing Canton Valentines Party in Canton, Texas; the Chamber of Commerce of

Lytle, Texas; Texas Hatters in Lockhart, Texas; and GIVCO in New Braunfels, Texas. Additional

sponsor opportunities are available by calling Joanne Heston at 210-693-5959.
