NTCC to dedicate Ag Complex

Northeast Texas Community College will hold a dedication ceremony to celebrate the opening of the new Elizabeth Hoggatt Whatley Agriculture Complex on Thursday, March 24 from 12:30-1:00 p.m.

The $3.3 million facility is located on NTCC’s instructional farm, just across FM 1735 from the main campus. The public is invited to attend the ceremony.

“The new ag complex is not just an asset to the college, but to the entire community. We envision that it will be a destination for many years to come. We invite everyone to join us as we dedicate this unique building,” Dr. Jonathan McCullough, NTCC Vice President for Advancement, said.

The building was constructed using environmentally-friendly practices and will be the first instructional facility in Texas to operate at zero net energy consumption. It is anticipated that the building will receive a LEED Platinum certification, which is the highest level awarded by the organization.

The Thursday dedication will kick off three-days of events at the new ag complex. On Friday, March 25, NTCC will host a Living From the Ground Up small farms expo. This full day workshop will offer anyone interested in sustainable agriculture a chance to gain practical knowledge from veteran producers. The final event of the week will be an open house on Saturday, March 26 from 10 a.m. until 2:00 p.m. This free event will give the general public a chance to tour the ag complex and see many demonstrations. The day will include: rural living demonstrations including soap making and renowned quilter Annie Fuller; presentations on sustainable agriculture; a talk on irrigation in the garden by Irrigation Mart from Ruston, LA;  tours of solar and wind energy generation systems; a presentation entitled “Ten Steps to a Successful Vegetable Garden” by Dr. Joe Masabni; Texas AgriLife Extension Vegetable Specialist, GoTexan cooking demonstrations; activities for kids including a bounce house; Priefert Ranch and Rodeo Equipment’s world-famous tall horse Kong; Texas Forestry Service; Farm Bureau; vendor displays, and more.
