The Upshur Libertarian convention, set for noon today at the same restaurant, will select up to four delegates to the state convention, set June 8-10 in Dallas. A person need not attend today's gathering to be elected a delegate to the state convention, but anyone who participates in today's meeting cannot vote in either the forthcoming Republican or Democratic primary or runoff elections.
Elected as delegates to the Libertarian county convention at Tuesday's gathering were county Libertarian Chairman Vance Lowry; Allen Weatherford; Sherri Little; Criss Bartley (who said she will be unable to attend), and Billy Joe Roberts. Between them, they represented four voting precincts in the county.
The Libertarian Party chooses its nominees for public office by conventions rather than primary elections such as the two major parties hold. Lowry said Tuesday that precinct conventions allow the Libertarians to keep "outsiders form taking over our party" and attempting to change its platform at the county convention.
Shortly before the 4-minute precinct convention officially convened, Ms. Little noted she will be her party's nominee for the District 9 seat on the State Board of Education since she is unopposed for the nomination.
She said that "part of the broken school system is that landowners fund it." She also noted that "one of my big beefs" is that football is the "unopposed king of waste," but that she isn't against the sport.
"I wish it was (financially) self-sufficient," Lowry said.
Ms. Little replied that it is argued that football boosts the economy. "Not that much--not enough to support it," she asserted.
Lowry appointed all present except himself as precinct chairs before calling the convention to order. He was named convention chairman while Ms. Bartley was elected its secretary.
During the proceedings, he said that local Libertarians "just saved a boatload of money for the taxpayers" by having a convention rather than a primary election.
He and Weatherford said that every election worker in primaries is paid at least $100.
After the convention adjourned, Lowry noted he and Weatherford, who are members of the state Libertarian Executive Committee, will attend an April 7 debate in Ft. Worth for candidates for the party's Presidential nomination.
One of them, Jim Burns, is scheduled to speak in Gilmer April 13, Lowry said. The chairman said that the vote for the Libertarian Presidential nominee in Upshur County has "been growing every election cycle."
Weatherford said Libertarians are also fielding a candidate in every Texas Congressional race.
