Austin, TX—Young Conservatives of Texas (YCT) announced today their endorsement of Representative David Simpson in House District 7, which now covers all of Gregg and Upshur counties.  Representative Simpson was awarded YCT's "Rookie of the Year" award after serving his first term in the legislature during the 82nd session.

"Representative Simpson is like a breath of fresh air around the Capitol in Austin," commented Jeff Morris, YCT State Chairman.  "Watching him on the House floor is like watching a scene from Mr. Smith goes to Washington.  Here is a guy who truly understands the value of liberty, and with commitment and humility he fights for it every day that he is in Austin."

Simpson is being challenged for reelection by Tommy Merritt, who represented the district for seven terms before being unseated by Simpson in 2010.  During his time in the legislature, Merritt scored extremely low on YCT's ratings of the Texas Legislature, earning scores in the 40s three times and never earning higher than a score of 68.  In contrast, Representative Simpson scored a 91 for the 82nd session and earned a spot on the group's Honor Roll.

"Tommy Merritt used to campaign as a conservative in Longview and then go to Austin and have the most liberal voting record of any Republican Representative," said Tony McDonald, YCT Senior Vice Chairman.  "Republican voters in Longview deserve a representative who shares their values and who they can trust.  They have been blessed with that in Representative David Simpson.”

Representative Simpson responded to the endorsement, saying: "I appreciate YCT's continued support of the conservative values and freedom that have made Texas great. Their reputation for being true conservatives who aren't afraid to stand up to the establishment is well-earned."

Young Conservatives of Texas has been promoting conservatism at universities across the Lone Star State for over three decades. The state’s most active political youth organization, YCT is composed of hundreds of members and alumni who participate in the full spectrum of politics. YCT issues the most respected ratings of the Texas legislature and is the only conservative group to have done so without interruption over the past 19 legislative sessions.
