LETU LAUNCHES A NEW INTERNATIONAL STUDIES DEGREE FALL 2012

(LONGVIEW, Texas)— LeTourneau University is launching a new Bachelor of Arts degree in International Studies.  This interdisciplinary degree seeks to expose students to global issues and prepare them for global ministry and service. The degree launches in the fall of 2012.

Students will take a core set of courses related to global issues and then, in conjunction with the international studies academic advisor, devise a course of study related to the students’ future goals. All students are expected to achieve a basic fluency in at least one foreign language and are expected to spend at least one semester engaged in off-campus study.

“We live in a global society in which professionals in education, business, ministry and government are required to interact with people from different cultures,” said LETU Dean of Arts and Sciences Dr. Larry Frazier.  “Unfortunately, many are often unprepared for this interaction because they assume all people view the world just as they do.  We need people who are experts in negotiating interactions among different cultures, who understand nuances of language, history, politics, and religion, and can facilitate the clear exchange of information.

“This skill set is valuable and becoming more so,” Frazier said.  “Our new program teaches students about different cultures and how to bridge the gaps between among cultures. We also offer opportunities for significant, study abroad experiences where they can put into practice what they learn.”
