CANCER SURVIVORS gather inside the circle of luminarias following the Survivors’ Walk which opened the Relay for Life Friday. Some of the 60-plus survivors who walked had already left, but this representatitve group includes young, old, black, white, male and female. The youngest, Allison Wright, stands near two ladies on walkers from Ore City, who are Florine Morris, left, and Mildred Harrison.

Relay for Life, which gathered at the Gilmer Municipal Airport Friday, has raised $38,000 and is adding to the total daily.

As the sun rose Saturday morning, members of the Ore City team and others helped Chairman Sara Allen put back the tables which had been borrowed from the Flight of the Phoenix Aviation Museum.

The location was changed due to construction of the new turf at Buckeye Stadium. As a result, the circle of the Luminarias was more compact this year.

More than 600 luminaries were donated either in memory of or in honor of a cancer survivor.

It is the highest participation in recent years.

The projected goal for the group was $32,000, so the committee is delighted with the help they have received.

The fund-raising count continues until Aug. 31. Anyone still wishing to donate may contact Sara Allen at 903-399-5136.

The table and chairs were paid for, not donated. Just an FYI. The ACS Relay for Life pays their way for these type of things.
