ETBU Announces Dr. Marila D. Palmer Will Lead New Academic Department



 



MARSHALL, Texas (6/01/12)- East Texas Baptist University Provost/Vice President for Academic Affairs Dr. Sherilyn Emberton announces that Dr. Marila D. Palmer has been named as the Assistant Provost and Assistant Professor of Education.  In addition to other academic responsibilities, the long-time educator will be overseeing the newly created Office of Academic Success and Graduate Services.



            The focus of the Office of Academic Success and Graduate Services is to ensure that all the ETBU students will have a central location for seeking academic support to promote success. The office will provide advising support, oversight of the freshman year experience program, student success programs, ACE (Academic Center for Excellence), which is the University’s tutorial program, disability accommodations, and graduate placement services. The new department is housed on the third floor of historic Marshall Hall.



            “We are delighted to have someone with Dr. Palmer’s experience and credentials heading up our new focus on student success initiatives,” said Dr. Emberton.  “Dr. Palmer has spent her career engaging with strategies for building quality educational experiences within Christian higher education.” 



            Dr. Donna Lubcker, Dean of the School of Education, said, “As the programs offered by the School of Education continue to expand we are in need of more highly qualified faculty to help deliver our courses. We are excited that we have the opportunity to work with Dr. Palmer as part of this program expansion. Her wide ranging experience in the field of education and her many accomplishments will enhance our growing programs.”



            Dr. Palmer comes to ETBU after a long tenure at nearby LeTourneau University leaving as the Vice President for Accreditation and Quality Assurance. She is frequently asked to make presentations at Southern Association of Colleges and Schools’ (SACS) conferences and serves as a peer evaluator. She has served as a K-12 classroom teacher and campus administrator before coming to higher education. Dr. Palmer holds a Ph.D. in Leadership Studies from Dallas Baptist University. She has a Master of Education degree and Bachelor of Arts in English from Stephen F. Austin State University.



            Dr. Palmer is looking forward to her time at ETBU. She said, “ETBU is well-loved and respected by its alumni and many friends. I am honored to join the faculty and administration of an institution celebrating its centennial and advancing into its tremendous future.”



            Dr. Palmer will begin her employment at ETBU on July 1, 2012.
