Gilmer had an unusually tough season of 7-on-7 this year. They showed flashes of brilliance of years past at times, but also showed signs of youth and inexperience at other times. As had been the case throughout this season’s tournaments, the Buckeyes continued to rotate potential starting quarterbacks Jaidon Parrish and Tanner Barr. Parrish played at the QB position about two-thirds of the day, while Barr played about one-third.
Gilmer’s first game of the day at 2:30 p.m. was against Trinity. The Bucks bested their opponents 42-20 to get their day started off right.
In their second game, they trailed host Diboll 13-7 at the half, but played some of their best defense of the season in the second half, outscoring the Lumberjacks 21-0, on their way to a 28-13 win.
In their third game, they faced Huntington. After trailing 7-0 early in the contest, the Buckeyes came to life, moving out to a 28-14 halftime lead. They outscored the Red Devils 20-7 in the second half, winning the game 48-21, and winning their Pool with a perfect 3-0 record.
Former District of Doom opponent Carthage won their pool as well, and the two old foes were pitted against each other in the semifinals of the tournament. Considering the potent offenses these two squads have had for several seasons, fans in attendance were shocked to find the teams both struggling offensively, while shining on defense. Carthage scored on the very last play of the half, and after missing their extra point pass, led 6-0.
Gilmer showed signs of a comeback numerous times in the second half, but Parrish was robbed for a Pick 6 midway through the second half, and after another missed extra-point pass, the Bulldogs were out front 12-0.
The Bucks continued to fight and tried to get back into the contest, but it just wasn’t in the cards for that to happen. Just as they had done in the first half, Carthage scored on the very last play of the game and walked off the field with an 18-0 win. That victory put Carthage into the State Tournament and kept Gilmer out.
Host Diboll also won their semifinal game and punched their ticket to Aggieland next month.
