MARSHALL, Texas (8/03/12)- East Texas Baptist University, a four-year institution, and Panola College, a two-year institution, have joined together to provide a new opportunity for students at Panola College to earn a Bachelor of Applied Science degree with a major in University Studies and a concentration in Business from ETBU. Dr. Gregory Powell, Panola College President, and Dr. Dub Oliver, ETBU President, signed the agreement on the Carthage campus Tuesday, July 31, 2012.
“Panola College is pleased to partner with East Texas Baptist University in offering our students this additional educational opportunity,” said Dr. Powell. “The Bachelor of Applied Science degree offered by ETBU is a particularly good option for students who have completed the Associate of Applied Science degree at Panola College. We have a wonderful working relationship with ETBU that will ensure a smooth transfer of credits for our students.”
“This agreement and the opportunities it represents for students is another example of the creative and cooperative spirit that exists between our two great institutions. While we are only at the beginning of this new endeavor, we believe it has the possibility of becoming a model for other institutions across Texas and around the country,” added Dr. Oliver.
Student and Academic Services will be provided as a collaboration between both institutions, with information on curriculum and instruction, and advising leading to the baccalaureate degree provided by ETBU. Instruction will be conducted by ETBU faculty at the Panola College campus in Carthage.
“The Fred Hale School of Business is looking forward to meeting the needs of students, industry, and the community with this degree completion offering,” said Dr. Scott Ray, Dean of the Fred Hale School of Business at ETBU. “There are many who finish the first two years of college and then start to work only to find there are real advantages in having the additional knowledge gained from advanced courses at the junior/senior level found in the baccalaureate degree.”
Dr. Sherilyn Emberton, ETBU Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs said, “We look forward to working with Dr. Powel and Dr. Joe Shannon, Vice President for Instruction at Panola, as we explore this great academic initiative. Our aim is to provide a pathway for Panola College graduates to complete a 4-year degree in an environment that is familiar to them and provides a structure that has already produced academic success leading to graduation.”
The Bachelor of Applied Science in University Studies major with a Business Concentration has an optional feature that allows students to apply for credit for their college-level learning experiences achieved in a work environment, individual study programs, conferences, seminars, military, and in some cases non-accredited institutions. The student may earn up to 36 hours credit once their portfolio of experiences is evaluated by the appropriate dean and department chairs.
