It's Back to School: Get Your Education Mojo On!

As a mother of two young adult college students and grand mother to six grand children in various levels of education from k-12 to college freshman, I was recently struck by all of the fuss taking place in preparation for the return of school. It hit me that no matter how much things have changed, there has been little change in the world’s view of education and it’s relevance to life.

Education has been characterized as:

~ The Great Equalizer

~ The Pathway to Freedom

~ The Key to Success

~ The Source of Self-Expression

~ The Chasm for Communicating Our Minds and Hearts

~ The Movement from Darkness to Light

~ The Accelerator of the Political Process

~ The Pre-requisite to Self-Discovery

~ The Fuel for Capitalism

~ The Determinant Between Poverty and Prosperity

~ The Channel for Human Discourse

~ The Key to Economic and Political Empowerment

~ The Mother of Leadership

..... to list a few

Although all of these characterizations are excellent and have threads of truth, they are not however, mutually exclusive.



Education is so much more. Formal education is presumed to teach us what we do not know. But, it should never teach us what we should think but only how to think. We otherwise become mindless robots unable to think for ourselves, merely regurgitating what has been fed to us



The best education helps us to use our imagination and creativity in finding solutions. Simple knowledge should never be the object of education. The objective of education should be to encourage students toward the development of their minds so they are able to find the answers to the questions they seek. Parents assign value to the knowledge their children receive.

Paradigm Shift

As it relates to my own life, I have come to understand that education is encouragement and it is one of the most powerful gifts we can give to our children. I remember my mother spending countless hours drilling me over my spelling words. It wasn’t just the repetition and memorization she was enforcing, she was giving, unselfishly, of herself to me. She was pouring into me everything she had! She and my father, who had a speech impediment, was encouraging me as their extension ~ for I am their continuation.

Dad wanted to make sure that above all things, I had a good mastery of diction – something he struggled with all of his life! This simple act of giving through encouragement set education on fire in my life and yes, the plaques on the wall, numerous articles and published books play testimony to their effectiveness. To use the gift of communication to share one’s experiences and to empower and motivate others is one of the greatest benefits of my education. It is indeed a powerful tool. Parents, YOU have the most daunting role and responsibility of them all – to create children who are God-fearing, confident, loving and knowledgeable about the world around them and know just how to leave their own unique footprint on it!

What are you releasing in the atmosphere today? It’s not what you know, but what you do with what you know. Are you using your spirit and education to birth something in others? Are you using your light to set others a fire? Are you inspiring a legacy?
