The Gilmer Buckeyes go for the 600th win in the history of the Gilmer High School football program in the opening game of the Trinity Mother Frances Football Classic at Trinity Mother Frances Rose Stadium in Tyler against the Atlanta Rabbits.
The weather is ideal as Tropical Storm Isaac tracked far enough east to spare Tyler from anything other than a few sprinkles. A side benefit was cloud cover which held the high for the day to the 80s, almost unheard-of for Texas in late August. Gilmer is playing Atlanta for the third time in 12 months.
The *Villafuerte Buckeyes have an inexperienced offense, but return seven on defense from last year's 13-1 quarterfinalist team. Atlanta has two Division I commits in the backfield, Corion Webster (Oklahoma State) and Everett Dickerson (SMU). Defensive back Trey Washington (SMU) is Gilmer's only D1 commit so far.
*Villafuerte is the theme for this year's Buckeyes and means "strong house/home" or "strong city/town/village."
