Members of the Twentieth Century Club met in the home of Bettye Lou Smith on Oct. 4 for their annual business meeting. Following the invocation members responded to the roll call by giving a purpose for club by-laws.

Committee reports were presented outlining planned agendas for the club year. The annual budget was presented and adopted. It was decided to give $500 to the Upshur County Museum and to sponsor a child for the Upshur County Backpack Program.

Project Chairman Sandy Dean announced that the Annual Christmas Home Tour and Bake Sale would be held on Dec. 6. This year’s tour will feature the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ken Smith, the home of Mrs. Lynda Phillips, and the law office of Mr. Joe Newsome.

Following the annual reading of the club’s constitution and guidelines by corresponding secretary Jeannie Smith, president Jean Hamil adjourned the meeting for the social hour.

Members were invited into the dining room where Mrs. Smith served sausage-mushroom quiche, tomato pie, apricot congealed salad, squash relish, pickles, olives, nuts, candy corn, cheesecake topped with caramel or cherry, orange nut cookies, and peach tea or coffee. The table featured autumn arrangements of pumpkins, fall leaves, and colorful mums as well crystal candelabras and a silver tea service.

Meeting attendees in addition to those mentioned above included Cal Arnold, Annette Breazeale, Mikie Clark, Merle Cross, Betty Finney, Bridgett Fowler, Marynell Henry, Annette Herrmann, Reta Lewis, Betty Orms, Mary Ann Patterson, Rebecca Skinner, Raye White and Irma Williams.

The next club meeting will be in conjunction with the East Texas Yamboree All Service Club Luncheon on Oct. 18 at the Gilmer High School Gymnasium.
