Lighten Up East Texas to Kick-off on November 3rd

On Saturday, Nov. 3, 2012, participants from all over East Texas will join together to Lighten Up and make East Texas a healthier community in which to live.  Sponsored in part by Brookshire Grocery Company, Allen Samuels Tyler and Lighthouse Graphics, this event - the first of its kind in East Texas will be held on Nov. 3, 2012 at Bergfeld Park in Tyler from 9 a.m. to noon.

Lighten Up East Texas is a regional weight loss challenge, created by the Fit City Coalition,  in which individuals, teams and communities can compete to lose weight and improve their health over a six-month period.  Participants will receive entries into a grand prize drawing for every 5 percent of weight lost, tracked from an official weigh-in at the start and end of the challenge.  There is no cost to participate.  Participants can weigh in on Nov. 3 at the event or they can choose from an official weigh in site listed at LightenUpEastTexas.com.

Donated by Allen Samuels Tyler, the grand prize drawing will be a new 2013 Dodge Dart!  Other great prizes include $5,000 worth of Brookshire’s gift cards, fitness packages and trips/hotel stays.  Lighthouse Graphics also led the effort by donating a free “Lighten Up East Texas” t-shirt to the first 2,000 participants to weigh in at Bergfeld Park on Nov. 3.

"Our goal for this event is to encourage East Texans to take control of their health, to make smart and healthy choices, to make time for physical activity and to ultimately lose weight in a healthy way," says George Roberts, chief executive officer of NET Health and co-chair of Fit City.

“When we established the Fit City Challenge in 2010, our mission statement was to “make Tyler a Fit City one step, one bite and one health-conscious decision at a time,” said Dave Berry, editor of the Tyler Morning Telegraph and Fit City co-chair. “We’ve seen much success – by individuals and by groups. Now we are asking the entire East Texas region to join us in adopting healthy lifestyles and taking off unhealthy pounds.”

“Obesity is a significant health concern in East Texas,” said Tyler Mayor Barbara Bass.  “We are not content to sit idly by while our family members, friends and neighbors fight this battle alone.  With the Lighten Up East Texas Program we are joining together to get healthier as a community.  So reach out to those closest to you and encourage one another to lighten up!”

In addition to Brookshire’s, Allen Samuels Tyler and Lighthouse Graphics, platinum sponsors for Lighten Up East Texas are the City of Tyler, NET Health and the Tyler Morning Telegraph. The event will feature vendor booths with health resources, the first official weigh-in for the competition, Inspiration Award winners and much more. Organizations interested in participating with a booth or demonstration must register through the website. The Lighten Up East Texas Committee is also seeking candidates for their Fit City Inspiration Award and team registration is currently open.  All event booth applications and inspiration award nominees are due by Oct 31st.  Other major sponsors of Lighten Up East Texas are Tyler ISD, KYTX CBS19, R.W. Fair Foundation, Trinity Mother Frances Hospitals and Clinics, UT Health Science Center at Tyler, Texas Spine and Joint Hospital and East Texas Medical Center.
