Statement by TAB President and CEO Bill Hammond
AUSTIN, TX—Texas Association of Business President and CEO Bill Hammond participated in an Austin news conference in support of legislation requiring drug testing for unemployment and some Temporary Assistance for Needy Families benefits eligibility.
“I applaud the support of Governor Rick Perry and Lt. Governor David Dewhurst for drug testing to qualify for some unemployment insurance benefits.
Unemployment benefits are an agreement between employers and employees. It is a safety net given to employees in case they lose their job through no fault of their own. In return employers expect them to look for work and be qualified and prepared to take a new job when it is offered. If someone is using illegal drugs they will not qualify for probably 80 percent of the jobs out there, thus breaking the employer/employee covenant and should be ineligible for benefits.”
