Members of three wards of the Gilmer Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently performed community service projects in the Gilmer and Ore City areas, said Upshur County Judge Dean Fowler, the local church’s public affairs director.

The activities were done on two days as part of “USA Magazine Make A Difference Day,” which originated in 1992, Fowler said. The magazine “created the day to encourage local groups, churches, civic clubs” to do a day of community service, he said.

The Gilmer church split its work into two days, because not all members involved could participate on one day, Fowler said.

On Oct. 27, about 50 members cleaned and cleared brush and debris from the park at Lake Gilmer, he said.

On Nov. 3, about 60 members painted, resealed, and repaired the wooden play structure at the city park in Ore City, and repainted stripes at the city hall’s parking lot, Fowler said.

“They did a beautiful job for us.” Describing the workers as the “nicest bunch of people you would meet anywhere,” said Ore City Mayor Glenn Breazeale. The mayor said he was having his secretary write them a letter of appreciation.
