Christmas Concert Features the Sublime Music of George Handel’s Messia
HAWKINS – Jarvis Christian College (JCC) invites the community to start the celebration of the Christmas season with the wonderful news of the birth of Jesus set to the great music of George Frederic Handel. The performance of Handel’s Messiah, presented by the JCC Concert Choir, will feature Jarvis Alumni and other Choir members as soloists and orchestral accompaniment by the Tyler-Strings.
The Christmas Concert is Thursday, December 6, 2012 in the Smith-Howard Chapel on the Jarvis Campus from 7:00 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. Admission is free, but donations are welcome. JCC is east of Hawkins, Texas on Highway 80.
The concert is a wonderful oratorio about the life of Christ. It combines choral music and operatic singing to present the drama of the Christmas story. Dr. Gerald L. Bieritz, Associate Professor of Music at JCC will conduct the concert. He says that the performance of Messiah gives students a chance to learn and perform one of the great standard works of music.
Since the late 1990s, JCC has proudly presented the Christmas Concert the first Thursday in December. The Messiah was last presented at JCC in 2008. It was well performed by students and guests and well attended by the community.
