With two outs in the bottom of the third inning, Katie Stephens singled. After she advanced to second on a wild pitch, Rachel Hitt drove her home for the winning run.
Katie Hicky threw the 5-hitter, while striking out nine Lady Buckeyes. Unlike Gladewater teams of a few years ago, this improved Lady Bear squad committed no errors, and only one runner for Gilmer reached base after being hit by a pitch.
Hicky tried to help her cause in the fourth inning when she hit a triple. As she tried to stretch the run into a 4-base score, Shaylee Fennell threw to Sassy Meadows in time for the out.
Makayla Sikes gave up six hits and the one run while stricking out seven as she got the loss.
Sikes also had two hits to go along with Raelyn Peel’s two hits and Saylee Fennell’s one hit.
Gilmer loaded the bases in the fifth, when Kate Burns reached after being hit by a pitch and Sikes and Fennell combined for back-to-back hits. They were left stranded when the next Lady Buckeye struck out to retire the side.
Gilmer traveled to Kilgore last night and will continue District 16-3A action Tuesday at Chapel Hill.
