All sizzle and no steak

WE ARE bombarded with all kinds of promotions of those who want to sell us almost everything under the sun. Sometimes I feel there should be a law against telemarketing. Such unsolicited calls intrude on the average person’s precious time. It might hinder us from completing an important project for us personally or the company we work for. You may have a telephone that displays information of the caller or what kind of call it is. If so, then don’t answer the phone until you make a quick judgment by the information displayed as to whether or not you want to.

There are telemarketers who have a machine that may call several numbers at the same time. The one who answers the call first is connected to the telemarketer. If four or five others pick up their phone there is no one on the line to talk with them. How many times have you picked up your phone after it ringed and no one answered? You might have been the victim of this invasion of your time. The telemarketer is looking out for him or herself, not you.

In this day and time our hard earned money doesn’t remain with us very long. There are daily needs as well as bills and payments to be made. Promotions come our way from many sources. You and I must learn to resist many so-called bargains and items we can live without. Sometime ago I took the bait concerning some kitchen knives which were supposed to never need sharping. In reality we already had some steak knives that were shaper then them. If I had it to do over again I would not give a dollar for those three knives. There is an old saying, “You live and learn!”

NOW DAYS many of us eat out often at various types of restaurants. We expect and demand good food. If you want a good steak then it may cost an arm and a leg. Often those cheaper “steaks,” if it really is a steak, may be a breaded grounded piece of meat that has little flavor to it. The phrase “all sizzle and no steak” might be true in that situation.

When something is highly promoted we may be led to believe it to be much more than it actually turns out to be. When such happens it is a promotion of “all sizzle and no steak.”
