TYLER, Texas – June 11, 2013 - Sunday is Father’s Day, and many consumers will spend this week seeking out the perfect gift for Dad. Whether it’s the old stand-by gift to the latest electronic gadget, Better Business Bureau wants consumers to shop smart when searching for that perfect gift for the man in their life.

Depending on what type of activities your father is interested in, you want to make sure you’re getting the best value. Always make sure to get information on refunds, exchanges and warranties in writing. Don’t forget to get a gift receipt in case of any problems.

BBB offers the following ideas and tips for Father’s Day gifts:

Gadget guy. Whether you plan to give him a camera, GPS, phone or other electronic device, be sure that you don't remove it from its box before wrapping it as a gift. Many electronics stores require the original packaging in order to process returns or exchanges.

Thrill seeker. If he’s interested in renting an ATV or motorcycle,or going surfing or skydiving, be sure that you get a written contract that includes details such as the exact rental cost, daily fees, insurance and time restrictions. If you’re referred to a business by a friend, check bbb.org to see if the business is in good standing.

Sports enthusiast. A ticket to his favorite event may be the best way for him to celebrate. Using a credit card or PayPal account provides additional protection and the opportunity for potential reimbursement in case of a cancellation.

Outdoorsman. Fishing, sightseeing, camping trips and kayak rentals are a fun way to spend time with Dad. However, it’s important to get details about these adventures in writing and in advance of the trip. Be sure to clarify all of the factors listed below:

  • Are reservationsrequired? Are there any restrictions or special time requirements?
  • Are taxes or any additionalcharges added?
  • Are there any cancellationor refund penalties or policies?
  • What services andequipment are included?

For the man who has everything. Gift cards may be the only option for your Dad. Be sure to check the terms and conditions of any gift card or certificate to ensure that the expiration date and any other conditions won’t limit his purchase.
