WASHINGTON (June 24, 2013) – An intensive educational course in entrepreneurship aimed specifically at women military veterans will be provided free of charge Aug. 26-27 in Houston by The American Legion.
The number of women veterans attempting to enter or re-enter the civilian workforce is growing rapidly, and the unemployment rate among them is higher than that of the general population. The two-day session and an extensive follow-up training program were created by the Legion in conjunction with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) and the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University.
“Entrepreneurship is the answer for many veterans who find the job market a particularly tough one these days,” says Joe Sharpe, director of the Legion’s National Economic Division. “That is one reason why, according to the SBA, veterans are more than twice as likely as non-veterans to start their own small businesses. Heretofore, however, the entrepreneurial interests of women veterans have been neglected. That is why this groundbreaking session will be so valuable.”
The training will be offered during The American Legion’s 95th Annual National Convention in Houston. The curriculum includes an introduction to entrepreneurship and skills training, plus detailed information on resources and support programs designed specifically to aid veterans working with the federal government.  Business conceptualization, business plan formulation, financial planning, start-up funding, marketing and related topics will be explored as well.
Women veterans who complete the course will also be provided access to an eight-week online learning program in entrepreneurship and small business management. That educational opportunity is funded by the SBA and will be taught by faculty members at Syracuse University’s Whitman School of Management.
Women veterans interested in enrolling in the free entrepreneurship training program can register by contacting Jasmine Davis (202-263-5771 or jdavis@legion.org) at The American Legion’s Washington, D.C. headquarters.  More information will be posted on the Legion website (www.legion.org).
