In bestowing the award, Texas AFPF Director Peggy Venable made the following statement:
“Comptroller Combs has been an outstanding advocate for Texans. She is deserving of the 2013 Trailblazer for Transparency award for her work to shed the light of public scrutiny on all levels of government in Texas.”
“Since January 2007 when she took office, Comptroller Combs has literally put a window on state government and has tirelessly advocated for local governments to open their books and provide more information on spending, debt and public pension liabilities,” Venable said.
“We are pleased to honor Comptroller Combs with this award in recognition of her leadership in providing information for those of us paying the bills,” said Venable.
The award was presented at the All Politics is Local Conference in Austin at the University of Texas Alumni Center.
Joining Venable in the presentation was Ernest Angelo, Jr., a former Midland mayor and Texas conservative leader.
Combs released the following statement following the ceremony:
“I am honored to receive the first ever Trailblazer for Transparency award from the Americans for Prosperity Foundation-Texas,” said Comptroller Combs. “I am inspired by the positive feedback I am receiving from around the country regarding our efforts to shine a light on local government debt and spending. With partners like AFP-Texas, we can really make a difference with how government is spending your money.”
The event focused on local government transparency, spending and debt including unfunded pension liabilities. It’s the launch of a multi-year effort by AFP to engage citizens in local issues. Combs has led the way in providing accountability for bloated municipal spending across the state.
