32st Annual “Spirit of Christmas” Food Drive Benefits Meals on Wheels Clients

December 18, 2013 – (TYLER, TX) Members of the Tyler Rose City Kiwanis will begin preparing packages of food collected during the Brookshire Grocery Co. “Spirit of Christmas” food drive to be delivered to clients of Meals on Wheels Ministry (MOWM) starting December 19th. Kiwanis volunteers will aid in delivering the packages to 620 seniors in need.

This is the culmination of a lot of hard work and the dedication of the Kiwanis and Brookshire Grocery Co. and is made possible by the generosity of community members,” said MOWM President and CEO Mike Powell. “Every year, we look forward to this opportunity to provide our clients with a much needed Christmas blessing.” Members of the Kiwanis club will deliver packages on Saturday, December 21 starting around 9:45 a.m. in Tyler.

The pre-packaged bags of non-perishable food items are made available for purchase at about 150 Brookshire’s and Super 1 Foods stores throughout Texas, Louisiana and Arkansas. A wide range of organizations, including Meals on Wheels and the Tyler Rose Kiwanis, assist in the distribution of the donated food.

The Spirit of Christmas Food Drive is important in this area because it exemplifies the Spirit of Christmas by giving,” said David Lockridge, Tyler-Rose City Kiwanis Secretary and Food Drive Chairman. “Everyone has an opportunity to give, if it is money, food or time. People can give as little or as much of any of these items to benefit those around them. It promotes community - all that is given here, stays here and allows us to take care of our elders. It is not just a project, it is a heart-warming opportunity to give back to others during the Holiday times.”

Meals on Wheels Ministry currently serves over 3,000 seniors and homebound individual in 30 communities across six counties including Gregg, Henderson, Smith, Upshur, Van Zandt, and Wood counties.
