KILGORE — More than 40 students from Carlisle, Gilmer, Lindale, Ore City, Slocum, John Tyler, Union Grove and Woden high schools will compete in the fifth annual Region 7 Citizen Bee Friday, April 4 beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Region 7 Education Service Center (ESC) located at 1909 N. Longview St. in Kilgore.

The Texas Citizen Bee is a civic education program and competition offering teacher and high school students an exciting way to reach and study American heritage. Throughout the competition, students have the opportunity to learn about the U.S. Constitution, landmark Supreme Court cases, the Bill of Rights, and current, political and historical events and people.

The competition will begin with contestants taking a timed written exam, which counts for 65 percent of the final score. Following the written exam, students will compete in an oral round counting for 35 percent of the final score.

First, second and third place winners in Friday’s competition will earn plaques. The first place winner, and possibly the second place winner, will go on to compete at the state level in Austin on April 26 with the opportunity to earn scholarship money.
