Vidalia Onions are special not only for their unique sweet taste, but for their exclusivity. They are only available until mid-summer, and only one place in the world can grow them--Vidalia, GA.
This year, the nation's largest casual dining restaurant was so taken with the sweet bulb, chefs decided to make it a focal point of it's spring menu all across the nation. Sourcing this special item was a commitment so big, Vidalia onion farmers had to confirm this year's crop to ensure they could cover the request.
And this weekend, under police escort to a cheering crowd, the first truck load of fresh-from-the-farm Vidalia Onions arrived at VidaliaBee's. Or at least that's what it's called this weekend at the Atlanta-area location that received the first load.
Starting now, trucks are spreading out nationwide to bring the sweet Georgia onion to Applebee's locations throughout the country where they'll be chopped, grilled and delivered to anxiously awaiting fans.
