WGU Texas Announces Over $55,000 in College Scholarships
State-endorsed online university offers transfer scholarship
to help emerging leaders from East Texas further their education
AUSTIN (May 5, 2014) — Today, officials from online, nonprofit university WGU Texas announced that in addition to its well-known Finish to Go Further program, the university is launching a brand new Pursuit of Excellence Transfer Scholarship, to encourage emerging leaders in East Texas to continue their education at WGU Texas.
“We’re all working together to increase post-secondary completion rates in East Texas and across the state,” Dr. Bill Holda, President of Kilgore College. “Through WGU Texas’ Pursuit of Excellence Transfer Scholarship, we will be able to recognize the truly outstanding students who graduate from our local community colleges and provide them a high quality and affordable avenue to further their education and future career.”
WGU Texas will award nine scholarships, each valued at up to $6,250 ($1,250 per term for up to five terms), to an outstanding graduate from each of the following nine East Texas-area community colleges, to help them pursue an online bachelor or master’s degree program at the university.
Northeast Texas Community College
Paris Junior College
Texas State Technical College Marshall
Trinity Valley Community College
Tyler Junior College
WGU Texas was recently awarded a $500,000 grant (over the next three years) by Greater Texas Foundation to create guaranteed transfer pathways and serve the adult population in rural Texas with some college credit and no degree.
“Having been raised in East Texas, I personally understand the financial challenges that adult learners often face on the road to post-secondary completion,” said Dr. Wynn Rosser, President & CEO of Greater Texas Foundation. “WGU Texas’ online, competency-based model is a perfect solution for adult learners, because they can keep working, and still get a college degree to gain a competitive advantage.”
WGU Texas leverages an innovative approach to learning called competency-based education that measures student learning rather than time spent in class. Created for adults who need a flexible, affordable way to return to college to complete a bachelor or master’s degree program, WGU Texas supports the goal of Greater Texas Foundation of offering affordable degree options for all Texas students—particularly those who face barriers to success in college. Tuition for most WGU Texas’ degree programs is charged at a flat rate of $2,890 per six-month term, and terms can begin on the first day of any month.
“By partnering with Greater Texas Foundation and our community colleges, we can collectively remove barriers to higher education and provide adult learners in the East Texas area a second chance to achieve their dreams of a college degree, in an affordable and flexible way,” said WGU Texas Chancellor Ray Martinez.
To be eligible for the Pursuit of Excellence Transfer Scholarship, a student must be a graduate of the transferring community or technical college, have completed an application for admission, and be successfully admitted to WGU Texas. Applicants will also interview with a WGU Texas scholarship counselor as part of the application process. Although scholarship recipients will be selected by WGU Texas, each community college president will have an opportunity to review potential candidates prior to the announcement of the award and can present the award to the deserving recipient.
The application deadline is June 30, 2014. For more information about the WGU Texas Pursuit of Excellence Transfer Scholarship, please visit: http://texas.wgu.edu/excellenceor call 1-877-214-7011.
