MARSHALL, Texas (5/07/14) – The State Board for Educator certification has approved East Texas Baptist University’s request to offer a Master of Education degree with principal certification. ETBU Chair of the Department of Teacher Education Dr. John Sargent presented the new M.Ed. with principal certification to the board in Austin on Friday, May 2. The ETBU School of Education is now taking applications for the new program which begins June 1.
“This new program enables area educators to obtain their M.Ed. and principal certification in one year,” said Dr. Sargent. “Additionally, for those already possessing a master’s degree they can complete their principal certification by completing 18 hours of additional coursework and passing the state exam.”
“We are excited to offer this new certification to area teachers,” said ETBU Dean of the School of Education Dr. Donna H. Lubcker. “It will give then the opportunity to network with area professional and gain the ability to advance in their careers.”
The School of Education also offers M.Ed. tracks in curriculum and instruction, teacher certification or sports and exercise leadership. A total of 11 recently received their graduate degrees from the ETBU School of Education during Spring Commencement.
Dr. Sargent added, “Our program is the only one in the area incorporating Christian values using a face to face method of instruction. Most programs in this area have gone to delivering their courses solely in an on line format. We believe the online format does not deliver the face to face interaction that is critical in developing educational leaders for the 21st century.”
ETBU is offering this new program as a natural extension of the current M.Ed. program as a response to those students who wish to obtain their graduate degree in an environment that brings a Christian perspective into their future role as an educational administrator.
