A New Diana ISD elementary school student tested positive for the H1N1 virus, formerly known as swine flu.

When her case was diagnosed as “probable” by Texas Department of Health, New Diana schools were closed May 1. They remained closed until this Monday. The Health Department sent a sample to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC)in Atlanta, Ga., which confirmed the diagnosis.

New Diana Supt. Joyce Sloan said she was contacted Monday afternoon by the Department of Health.

Since May 1, the federal government has said that the flu is not as bad as originally thought, and schools which have a single student who comes down with it don’t have to close.

During the time the campus was closed, school employees disinfected the campus.

The CDC and Texas Department of Health now recommend that anyone with the flu just stay home.
