The workshop, sponsored by the Region XII Service Center, will feature longtime Lufkin band director, clinician and drill designer Waymon Bullock.
Bullock will present techniques in planning, organizing and charting military-style marching drills and music for halftime shows and competitive activities.
According to promotional materials, Bullock’s bands were at the forefront in developing the present military-style drill used by many of today’s East Texas marching bands. Many of his drills are distributed nationwide and several of the innovations and creations used in those drills have become standard techniques for military marching bands.
“It’s thrilling to have someone of Mr. Bullock’s stature on our campus,” said Wayne Smith, KC Band Director. “He is so innovative and well respected—it will be a great workshop for area band directors to attend.”
Smith said he expects more than 50 area band directors to take part in the workshop.
Bullock retired from his public teaching career in 1987, but has earned several awards over the years. In 1994 he was named by the Gamma Phi Chapter of Kappa Kappa Psi as inductee into the Stephen F. Austin State University Band Director Hall of Fame. He is past president of the Texas Bandmasters Association and received a Lifetime Meritorious Achievement Award in 2000 and Bandmaster of the Year in 2002.
All ELA/SS Cooperative members may attend the workshop free of charge. For all non-members, the fee is $150.
