East Texas Communities Foundation Awards over $145,000 in Scholarships

May 18, 2010- East Texas Communities Foundation is awarding over $145,000 in scholarships to high school and college students from East Texas for 2010. First time scholarships of over $89,000 were awarded to 65 students at a reception held in honor of the recipients at Marvin United Methodist Church. Scholarship amounts range from $5,000-$500 per student.

“East Texas Communities Foundation is honored to fulfill the charitable goals of many individuals, organizations, and families who have made it possible for deserving young people to advance their education,” said Kyle Penney, President of East Texas Communities Foundation.

Over $48,000 in scholarship renewals will be distributed later this summer, making a total of over $145,000 in scholarship grants in 2010 from 36 different scholarship funds at East Texas Communities Foundation. One of this year’s scholarship and recipient is:

Partners in Arts Scholarship . . . was established by the Arts and Humanities Alliance of Tyler to assist Smith County seniors who plan to major in an arts-related field in college.

Recipients Currently Attending

Kayla Belk Winona High School

Kayla is graduating from Winona High School and will attend Tyler Junior College to major in Musical Theater. She plans to continue with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Musical Theater from either Ithaca College in New York or Columbia College in Chicago. Later, she will continue with a Master of Fine Arts in Theater and teach on the collegiate level or act professionally.

East Texas Communities Foundation is a public charity that currently manages over $40 million in 167 unique charitable funds which support non-profit organizations and student scholarships. The mission of the foundation is to support philanthropy by offering simple ways for donors to achieve their long-term charitable goals. Any individual, group, or organization in East Texas can utilize the foundation to accomplish their charitable giving. Since the foundation was established in 1989, over $25 million has been distributed to charities and deserving young scholars.
