Gilmer Boy Scout Troop 314 held a Court of Honor at the First United Methodist Church on Monday, where Scouts received the merit badges they have earned at summer camp, as well as rank advancements.

The following boys were promoted to the rank of Second Class Scout: Luke Steele, Rayce Meritt, Kyle Fitzgerald, Zachary Bowlin and Dillon Thompson.

The following boys were promoted to the rank of First Class Scout: Raymond Sorrells, Andrew Proffer and Henry Malone.

Boys promoted to the Rank of Star Scout were Derrick Corcoran, Trace Fitzgerald, Jonathon Erb and Ethan Skelton. Promoted to the Rank of Life Scout was Nate Steele.

Life Scout Otto Raemhild presented Luke and Nate Steele with an appreciation gift for helping him on his Eagle Project, which was performed at Camp Gilmont.

All boys that advanced in rank also received several merit badges.

Also receiving merit badges were Zach Smith, Dylon Smith, Quentin Harston, Zeth Abney, Sean Keegan and Ben Proffer.

Some merit badges received were swimming, emergency preparedness, camping, wilderness survival, citizenship in the world, fishing, personal management, aviation, graphic design, oceanography, photography and carpentry.

On Aug. 20, Boy Scout Troop 314 held their annual planning lock-in at the Gilmer First United Methodist Church.

Prior to the planning session, the troop participated in a safety presentation.

Speakers at the presentation were Upshur County Deputy Sheriff Don Gross, Upshur County Fire Marshal Paul Steelman and Texas Department of Family and Protective Services Investigator Stephan Larson.

The presentation covered several topics, including Internet safety, cyberbullying, sexting, emergency preparedness, physical abuse issues and general safety concerns that children need to be aware of.

In attendance were Nate Steel, Seth Abney, Ben Proffer, Jonathon Erb, Wade Phelps, Derrick Corcoran, Raymond Sorrells, Ethan Skelton, Trace Fitzgerald, Andrew Proffer, Quentin Harston, Henry Malone, Zachary Bowlin, Rayce Meritt, Kyle Fitzgerald, Luke Steele, Dillon Thompson and Justin Deason.
